Project Overview

This specialized material handling project involved the design and export of a 90-degree hydraulic tilter for Liner International SPA in Italy. The system is engineered to reorient 1700kg cylindrical rolls between horizontal and vertical positions, facilitating precise partitioning and downstream processing. To ensure load stability during the 90-degree transition, the platform incorporates a custom-engineered V-groove geometry.

Problem: Engineering Challenges in High-Load Roll Handling

When handling 1,700kg cylindrical rolls, standard tilting equipment often encounters critical failure points. In the context of the Italian facility, we identified three primary challenges:

  1. Lateral Stability and Roll Slippage: Standard flat platform tilters cannot mechanically lock cylindrical loads. During the 90-degree rotation arc, the shift in the center of gravity risks load slippage, which can lead to material edge damage or catastrophic equipment failure.

  2. Logistical Obstructions (Floor Height): Above-ground installations create trip hazards and require long ramps for pallet jack access, which consumes valuable floor space in high-density manufacturing zones.

  3. Operational Cycle Inefficiency: The process required a “Double-Tilt” logic—tilting the roll 90 degrees for partitioning and then tilting it back 90 degrees. Most conventional systems are not optimized for frequent, high-torque bidirectional cycles.

Solution

Custom Engineering for Precision and Safety

To overcome these challenges, our engineering team developed a specialized configuration of the 90-degree hydraulic tilter:

  • Integrated 160° V-Groove Deck: To eliminate slippage, we integrated a 200mm wide V-groove across the 1600mm platform. This creates a mechanical “cradle” that self-centers the roll, ensuring zero lateral movement during the 90-degree transition.

  • Pit-Mounted Flush Installation: The entire system was designed for pit mounting. This allows the platform to sit flush with the Italian facility’s floor at its lowest point, enabling seamless AGV and pallet jack access without ramps.

  • Synchronized 4-Cylinder Hydraulic Logic: To handle the bidirectional “tilt-return” cycle, we utilized a four-cylinder configuration (

    80-60). This provides redundant lifting force and ensures smooth motion, even when the roll’s center of mass is modified during the partitioning phase.

  • Pedestal-Mounted Control with Remote Tether: The control unit is mounted on a fixed base with a 5-meter tethered cable, keeping operators at a safe distance from the 1.7-ton load.
