This engineering project involved the design, integration, and commissioning of a high-capacity quad-scissor lift platform for a primary metal processing facility located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The facility serves as a critical node for the regional distribution of heavy-gauge steel components, requiring a vertical transport solution capable of bridging a 3.2-meter elevation gap within a high-cycle production environment.

The deployment necessitated a robust lifting architecture designed to withstand the unique environmental stressors of the UAE, including high ambient temperatures and airborne particulate matter common in the Middle East’s industrial corridors. Unlike standard lifting tables, this heavy-duty scissor lift was engineered to handle a substantial 10,000 kg vertical payload while simultaneously resisting significant lateral forces during the loading and unloading phases. The client’s logistics hub faced significant operational constraints when transitioning from standard cargo to heavy-duty industrial components. The existing infrastructure lacked the structural integrity to support the specific dynamics of their new material handling protocol.

  • Complex Loading Dynamics: The primary engineering bottleneck was the requirement to withstand a 4-ton lateral force along the longitudinal direction while the platform was at full extension. Standard scissor lifts are designed for vertical loads; lateral stress of this magnitude typically leads to catastrophic scissor-arm warping or pivot pin failure.

  • Vertical Displacement Requirements: To reach the secondary mezzanine level, a total stroke of 3,200 mm was required. Maintaining platform stability at this height with a 10-ton load requires a specific scissor geometry to prevent oscillations.

  • Harsh Environmental Conditions: The Jebel Ali facility operates in an environment where dust and high temperatures are prevalent. The client’s previous equipment suffered from electrical failures and hydraulic seal degradation due to inadequate protection ratings.

  • Strict Control and Feedback Protocols: The integration into the facility’s existing Warehouse Management System (WMS) required a sophisticated PLC-based control logic capable of millimetric height adjustment and real-time status feedback for remote monitoring.

  • Safety and Redundancy: Given the payload’s weight (10 tons), any uncontrolled descent posed a critical safety risk. The solution required redundant safety mechanisms to lock the platform in place during power loss or hydraulic pressure drops.

To meet the rigorous technical demands of the UAE industrial sector, our engineering team developed a customized SL-10T-4L (Four-Linkage) scissor platform. The solution prioritized structural rigidity and specialized hydraulic management.

1. Structural Reinforcement and Quad-Scissor Geometry
The core of the lift utilizes a four-stage scissor linkage  design. This configuration allows for a compact closed height of 1050 mm while achieving a 3200 mm stroke. The scissor arms are constructed from 250mm x 100mm x 6mm rectangular tubing, providing superior torsional resistance compared to standard flat-bar steel. This specific material choice was critical to managing the 4-ton lateral force requirement without structural deflection.

2. Specialized Hydraulic System and Fluid Integrity
The hydraulic circuit was designed for high-frequency operation using an 11kW heavy-duty motor and a 380V/50Hz power system tailored for the UAE electrical grid. A critical technical inclusion was the requirement for hydraulic fluid cleanliness. Following the NAS1638 Class 7 standard, the entire system underwent chemical pickling (acid washing) according to CB/T3760-1996 protocols to eliminate internal contaminants. The oil tank features integrated temperature sensors and an air-blast cooler to ensure stable viscosity in the Dubai heat.

3. Electrical Systems and IP56 Compliance
Given the environmental challenges, the control system was housed in an IP56-rated enclosure. The electrical architecture utilizes Schneider and Siemens low-voltage components, ensuring long-term reliability and local availability of spare parts in the GCC region. The system includes an integrated PLC that manages:

  • Automatic stop at upper and lower limits via high-precision limit switches.

  • Synchronized dual-cylinder operation.

  • Emergency stop functionality with a non-automatic reset safety relay.

4. Safety Redundancy and Maintenance Design
The platform is equipped with several “Fail-Safe” features. To prevent uncontrolled descent, specialized pressure-compensated burst valves are mounted directly to the cylinder ports. The platform surface consists of 6mm anti-slip chequered plate to ensure traction during the high-torque loading cycles. For maintenance, the design includes mechanical locking bars that support the full 10-ton weight, allowing technicians to work safely beneath the structure.
